Brief history

The history of the founding of Valeriu Ghereg Department of Anesthesiology and Reanimatology No. 1  is closely linked to the development of anesthesiology and reanimatology and the consolidation of this field as a science, study discipline and specialty.

The first certified specialist in the field of anesthesia and resuscitation, in 1959, was doctor Stanislav Poliuhov, from the Republican Clinical Hospital. In 1961, at this institution, the first Anesthesiology unit was organized. It was headed by Stanislav Poliuhov. Doctors Nicolae Burdila, Alexandru Florea and Grigorii Bronstein carried out their professional activities here. In 1962, the training of anesthetists began in the form of a specialization course.

In 1975, the first Department of Anesthesiology and Reanimatology was founded at Chisinau State Institute of Medicine (CSIM) that was reorganized into a university on 25 July  1991. Stanislav Poliuhov, university professor, Habilitated Doctor of Medical Sciences, Scientist Emeritus, was appointed as head of the department. Stanislav Poliuhov together with other members of the department - Gh. Cazacu, A. Corcus, V. Rafulea and V. Ceban -  laid the foundations for scientific research and teaching process. Later, the Society of Anesthesiology and Resuscitation of the Republic of Moldova was founded, with Professor Poliuhov at the helm.

Between 1993-1997, the Department of Anesthesiology and Reanimatology, within the Faculty of Refresher Medical Training, was led by university professor Vasile Grosu, and between 1997-2005 - by university professor Boris Pârgari.

In 1991, the Department of Anesthesiology and Reanimatology was founded at the Faculty of Residency and Clinical Fellowship, by the brilliant doctor and Scientist Emeritus, university professor Valeriu Ghereg. At the initiative of Professor Ghereg, the foundations of a contemporary European school of anesthesia and intensive therapy were laid. After the tragic death of Professor Valeriu Ghereg on 24 February 2005, the department was merged with that of the Faculty of Refresher Medical Training, led at the time by university professor Boris Pârgari, who was appointed as head of the new department. In the following two years, the department continued its activity based on the principles of the contemporary school of anesthesia and intensive therapy, until the demise of Professor Boris Pârgari on 30 August  2007. After this unfortunate event, the Department of Anesthesiology and Reanimatology of the Faculty of Refresher Medical Training was divided. As a result, Valeriu Ghereg Department of Anesthesiology and Reanimatology No. 1 within the Faculty of General Medicine and Department of Anesthesiology and Reanimatology No. 2 within the Faculty of Refresher Medical Training were established.

Currently Valeriu Ghereg Department of Anesthesiology and Reanimatology No. 1 of the Faculty of Medicine No. 1 is located within the premises of the Institute of Emergency Medicine. Starting from 2007, it has been led by university professor, Habilitated Doctor of Medical Sciences, Serghei Şandru.
